Dips and sauces Buying GuideDips and sauces are good appetizers as supplement with food. Dips and sauces are often made in Middle eastern cooking. Dips are usually served as an appetizer, usually with flat bread or pita bread. A dip or dipping sauce is a common commodity for many types of food. Dips are used to add flavour to a food such as seafood ,potato chips and falafel. Unlike other sauces, instead of applying the sauce to food, the food is put, dipped and added into the dipping sauce and therefore the name dips and sauces. They are commonly used for finger foods and other easily held foods .Dip is a widespread food and various forms of dip are eaten all over the world.
Some types of dip include:
- Aioli: The garlic version of mayonnaise,
- Chili oil: used as a dipping sauce for meat,
- chocolate: a dip for various fruits and doughnuts,
- clam dip : a kind of condiment for dipping crackers and chips.
- Fry sauce: a dip made from ketchup and mayonnaise and is eaten with French fries and onion rings.
- Ranch dressing,
- Mustard dressing,
- Olive oil,
- Soy sauce,
- Spinach dip are other types of dips.
Apart from adding to the food, they taste good as they are home cooked and fresh. One can choose the ingredients one prefers for making dips and sauces. Dips are made with sour cream, melted cheese as the base, but many can be made with nondairy substitutes or no dairy ingredients at all.
Sauces are liquids or semi-solid toppings which are added to complement a diverse range of foods including meats and other main dishes- even pancakes and desserts. Sauces are actually accessories to add color, moisture and flavour to other foods. Therefore, sauces and dips are staple for any kind of gathering. Some of the dips are so delicious that one would want to eat them as a meal. They are often serves as an entrée with vegetables or as part of a dish. One can also prepare extra and can be used for salads and snacks. Dips and sauces are not as rich as nut pates, since they are made with avocadoes, tomatoes and oils rather than nuts and seeds .
Various dips are:
Pico de Gallo: Ingredients are ripe tomatoes, yellow onion, garlic, lemon juice, lime juice, cilantro leafs, and ground pepper. To make this dip, one needs to combine all the ingredients in a medium size bowl and stir to mix. Cover and chill for atleast two hours before serving.
Hot Artichoke dip: To prepare this, artichoke hearts, parmesan cheese and mayonnaise are required. Directions to make this are that one has to preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut artichokes into quarters. Mix cheese and mayo together. Add antichoke hearts and pour this mixture into small baking dish and bake till hot.
Guacamole: To prepare this, peel avocado and mash well. Add sour cream, tomato, onion, garlic salt and lemon juice and mix well.
Refried bean dip: Heat oil and beans, jalapeno and garlic powder and simmer it until beans do not stick to the pan. Now place it in a dish and mix with sour cream. Later on garnish it with shredded cheese.
Taco dip: Layer bean dip, avocado, sour cream, onions , tomatoes, black olives and mix together the taco seasoning mix , sour cream and mayonnaise.
Butter milk dip: In a bowl, add sour cream, buttermilk, salt, garlic and pepper and mix well. Cover the dish and keep it in refrigerator for at least two hours and later on it can be served with vegetable sticks.
Salmon dip: Place all the ingredients like cheese, mayonnaise, one lemon, sour cream, chives and ground pepper into a blender and process till the mixture turns smooth. Then refrigerate until serving.
Honey butter: In a small bowl, add butter and honey. Then stir with wooden spoon till well blended.
Warm mushroom dip: Add bacon drippings, mushrooms onions, garlic and cook till liquid evaporates. Stir in flour and pepper and mix well. Add cream cheese, sauce, soy sauce and cook till cheese melts. Blend in sour cream, lemon juice and bacon and cook till thoroughly heated. Serve with crackers.
Three tomato salsa: Heat the oil in a pan. Add onion and sauté and then add white wine and tomatillos, stir and then remove from heat. Add red and yellow tomatoes to the pan when it is still warm. Add salt and pepper and leave it for twenty minutes and then drain the juices from it before serving.
Almond cheese spread: Fry bacon and beat cream cheese and then slowly stir by adding mayonnaise. Then add bacon, vegetables and seasonings.Mix well and leave it for overnight and then it can be served with crackers. When it comes to sauces there are many like
Quick Hollandaise sauce: Heat butter slowly in a pan till it bubbles. Blend egg york, lemon juice and pepper in a blender for five seconds. Slowly pour butter onto yolk mixture in a steady steam until all is added.
Tomato Chutney: Put tomatoes, onions, apples and peaches, add brown sugar, vinegar salt, spices and chili powder. Simmer for two hours till mixture becomes thick. Then take off the chutney from the heat and leave it for five minutes.
Remoulade sauce: In a blender, combine mayonnaise, mustard, chopped capes, parsley, lemon peel, ground black pepper and salt to taste and blend well.Chill for several hours before serving.
Apple sauce: In a heavy bottom sauce pan, add apples, butter, sugar, lemon rind and water. Stir frequently until apples are soft and pulpy. Serve hot.
Cranbery Orange sauce: Heat all the ingredients like orange juice, orange peel, cranberries, syrup, sugar, lemon juice on a medium heat. Cook till moisture thickens and stir for about five minutes. Remove sauce from heat and stir in liqueur. Refrigerate until well chilled.
